HISTORY: In 1890 renowned Chicago architect Louis Sullivan, called the Father of the Skyscraper, asked his senior assistant, one Frank Lloyd Wright, a talented young man, to design him a modest country house down in Mississippi, where he would go for holidays. Wright gave him a design with a wide porch stretching the length of the house, allowing for breezes and shade to cool the interiors. A few years later Sullivan sold the house Fred and Elizabeth Norwood, and then in 1897 it was heavily damaged in a fire. Sullivan helped them with the reconstruction, incorporating some improvements. Just over a century later, in 2005, the house was again heavily damaged, this time by Hurricane Katrina. Had it been any other house it would have been demolished. Fortunately for us, due to its historic nature, it was purchased by the state of Mississippi and was completely rebuilt. It is open to the public by appointment.
As a work of art these prints are worth purchasing in their own right. For those of you interested in building a historically inspired house, these plans offer an excellent starting point. The basic scheme shown in the plans could be altered in a variety of ways to suit people's individual needs. The plan is single story and all the spaces open onto terraces and have cross ventilation. It is a single story design. This house would be comfortable in a suburban or country setting. The house, including porches, has outside dimensions of approximately 63' x 57'.
SHIPPING: Your drawings are shipped to you, rolled, not folded, in a Priority Mail tube. This eBay listing includes architectural prints ONLY. Any photos shown in the description are for information only and are NOT included in your purchase. Thanks.
IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO BUILD: These plans are NOT complete architectural drawings as might be required by your local permitting agency and do not contain all the structural, waterproofing and other details and information necessary for construction. But your local builder or architect should be able to adapt these drawings and add to them as necessary. What they do provide is accurate design information about a REAL historic house, not a pseudo-historic tract house as you will find in the house plan magazines on your supermarket shelf.
INTERNATIONAL BUYERS PLEASE NOTE: Orders shipped to addresses outside the USA may be subject to customs duties at their destination. The buyer is responsible for any such duties.
The original drawings from which these dimensionally accurate scans were made are kept at the Historic American Building Survey, in the Library of Congress. (WR015)
