The Saltbox, a colonial classic, with its rustic, asymmetric charm embodies country living up and down the eastern seaboard. John Quincy Adams, 6th president of the United States, was born in this house, to John and Abigail Adams. This home and the neighboring home remained the home of the Adams as the generations passed.
The house is a perfect example of the Saltbox form which was common all throughout New England. It's shape came about as small houses were expanded over time. This example also has a massive central chimney with fireplaces and ovens sharing the common brick mass, another feature characteristic of New England architecture.
