HISTORY: “Red Rocks” was the home of journalist and editor William Allen White. His home is a beautiful example of the Tudor style, one of the many styles that was popularly revived around the turn of the century. The Kansas City architects Wight and Wight provided a design that skillfully mixed a broad range of materials, stone, brick, half-timber (stucco and wood) and a slate roof. The house, as it appears in these drawings, reflects extensive remodeling that was done in the 1920s after a fire destroyed the original roof.
As a work of art these prints are worth purchasing in their own right. For those of you interested in building a historically inspired house, these plans offer an excellent starting point. The first floor consists of a large Living Room with several sitting areas, a large Dining Room, a Kitchen with 2 pantries and a WC. A large trellised porch opens off the Living Room. The second floor consists of 5 bedrooms and 2 ½ baths. There is room for an additional 3-4 bedrooms in the attic. The house is built over a full basement. Pergolas lead to a carport that accommodates 1 car. Although ideal for a flat site, these plans would also work on a moderately sloping one. This house would be comfortable in a suburb or country setting. Excluding porches and pergolas, the main house has outside dimensions of approximately 36’6”’x63’. More space would be needed to accommodate the porches and pergola.
