HISTORY: Distinguished by chaste and elegant elevations, sophisticated brickwork, and a timeless floor plan, the Wythe house of 1755 is a masterpiece and model of a colonial country mansion. Built by Richard Taliaferro for himself, it was later occupied by his son-in-law and daughter, George and Elizabeth Wythe. George Wythe, a distinguished legislator, was a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

The 2-story brick house over a raised basement has the traditional “4 over 4” plan, a central hall with 2 rooms on either side, repeated on the first and second floor. This particular example is characterized by its excellent proportions and beautiful interior detailing, with an elegant staircase providing a free flow of space between first and second floors. As a work of art these prints are worth purchasing in their own right. For those of you interested in building a historically inspired house, these plans could easily be adapted to a flat to moderately sloping site. Its compact and efficient form make it especially desirable and adaptable. Principal reception rooms are all on the first floor with bedrooms above. The whole sits on a raised basement. On a sloping site a ‘walk out’ basement could provide additional living space. Its exterior dimensions are just over 36’x54’. It would be at home equally in a town, suburban or country setting.

IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO BUILD: These plans are not complete architectural drawings as might be required by your local permitting agency and do not contain all the structural, waterproofing and other details and information necessary for construction. But your local builder or architect should be able to adapt these drawings and add to them as necessary. What they do provide is accurate design information about a REAL historic American home, not a pseudo-historic tract house as you will find in the house plan magazines on your supermarket shelf

INTERNATIONAL BUYERS PLEASE NOTE: Orders shipped to addresses outside the USA may be subject to customs duties at their destination. The buyer is responsible for any such duties.

The original drawings from which these dimensionally accurate scans were made are kept at the Historic American Building Survey, in the Library of Congress. (CW007)
